Minister Miftah Ismail announced the process of subsidy on petrol and diesel to eligible families under the relief program announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. But we all want to know how to get free petrol in Pakistan.

The Finance minister of Pakistan said:

Addressing a press conference in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad, the finance minister said families who are part of Benazir’s “Income Support Programme” will automatically get Rs 2,000 under the “Prime Minister’s Cheap Petrol Cheap Diesel Scheme.”

Ismail added that families not part of the BISP database should send their identity card numbers to 786 to verify their eligibility.

Miftan said the government would verify the expected beneficiaries, and if their family income is less than Rs 40,000, they will get Rs.

He said that the subsidy amount is equal to five percent of the total income of these families because, according to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data, an average Pakistani spends five percent on transportation.

Criticizing the former finance minister, Ismail said Sahukat Tareen had promised the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that there would be no subsidy on petroleum products except the Rs 30 duty.

“The government was making a loss of Rs 84 per liter of diesel. Multiply that and add Rs 30 levy, it comes to Rs 114. 260 for petrol at Rs.”

Responding to Tareen’s claim that the previous government kept money to finance the subsidy announced by former Prime Minister Imran Khan in February, Ismail said that if Tareen could tell where the money was, he would be happy to use it.

Ismail said the truth is that he did not keep anything.

The finance minister also said that the price of petroleum products would not be increased on June 1 after the price hike on Thursday.

Petrol and diesel prices are revised fortnightly on the 1st and 15th of every month. However, the government was forced to raise it on May 26 after the IMF linked the next phase of liberalization with removing subsidies on petroleum products.

Talking about the resumption of IMF loan operations, the finance minister said staffing levels are expected to be reached by June.

The finance minister said the money from the IMF was not needed to increase the reserves; instead, it was required to secure funds from other multilateral sources.

He said China would soon announce a financial package, while the country hopes to receive support from the Asian Development Bank, Asian Infrastructure Development Bank and the World Bank.

The minister added that Saudi Arabia has already announced a $3 billion loan that the Gulf nation has deposited in the central bank’s reserves.
